Our second project in Painting Class was the 5 object still life. The objective of this project, as beginners, was to focus on values and shadows of a painting. Limited to only using black and white we learned that there are many different values of one color and can make a very big difference. One of the biggest and most important things I learned was that the time of day and the light really makes a difference in the painting. Our surface gesso covered paper and it was very forgiving and easy to use. I also learned a lot about edges and the difference between hard and soft and how light effects and determines those edges. In my final revision, I paid attention to the background and gave it some variation in stroke compared to the actual objects. I also made the shadows lighter because in reality they were lighter than the darkest objects on the surface.
